Advice on options in education and training post GCSEs

WITH more choice than ever before for teenagers looking at their options post 16, Buxton & Leek College is offering expert advice to teenagers in the local areas this January.

Whether they are looking at a vocational course, apprenticeship or A Levels it is vital that youngsters taking their GCSEs this Summer get the right information on that important next step. For the jobs market has changed beyond all recognition over the past decade so making the right decision about where and what to study has never been so important.

All teenagers must participate in some form of education or training up until the age of 18 now but that does not mean they have to remain in school. They can continue their studies with full time vocational qualifications, or start an Apprenticeship, working alongside professionals and attending College on just one day a week. Both of these options will enable progression onto Higher Education or into employment.

To help parents and teenagers sort their way through the many available options, Buxton & Leek College is offering two Advice Evenings this month – one at the Leek Campus in Stockwell Street and one at the Devonshire Dome in Buxton.

Expert teams will be on hand in both towns to advise young people on what they will need to study to get them ready for their chosen career, which academic and vocational qualifications are important for career paths, to universities and help with UCAS applications.

For those aged 18+ Buxton & Leek College also offers University level courses such as HND/Cs and Foundation Degrees. This means that adults in the Leek and Buxton areas do not need to travel far to gain these types of qualifications. Tutors will be on hand to discuss these courses too.

Leek’s event takes place on Wednesday January 18 from 5pm until 8pm when prospective students and parents can find out all they need to know about a wide range of courses and talk to college staff. Buxton Campus is offering the same opportunities on Thursday January 19, again between 5pm and 8pm. There is also the chance to view industry standard facilities, including the £8.5m campus re-development at Leek.

Students should go online at www.blc.ac.uk or call 0800 074 0099 to book their places.
