International Women’s Day: BLC sports student wins limited university place and the chance to study in Australia

In celebration of International Women’s Day Buxton & Leek College caught up with one of its inspirational sports students, Avleen Kaur, who has managed to excel on her course whilst battling with ill health.

Avleen Kaur won a place on the Sport Science programme at the University of Portsmouth, with the opportunity to study abroad as part of her course.

Avleen’s hard work and determination (whilst on the Derby County Community Trust Football & Education Programme) has paid off as recently she has received an offer to study Sport Science at the University of Portsmouth, with the opportunity to study abroad as part of her course.

“This is a big achievement for me,” says Avleen, “as I managed to get an offer at my first-choice university on a course that only accepts 30 people per year, and I get to fulfil an ambition of travelling to Australia.”

Avleen believes her time at Buxton & Leek College on the Derby County Community Trust Football & Education Programme has equipped her with the confidence, skills, and knowledge to begin her new course.

“I would say this course has helped me to explore career opportunities within the sport and physical activity sector, and it’s provided me with a foundation of knowledge that I can now expand on.”

“Studying modules like Principles of Anatomy and Physiology & Fitness Testing helped me to realise that a sport and exercise science degree was the right pathway for me because I enjoyed them so much.”

During a testing time when Avleen was beset with injuries, her tutors really supported her and gave her coping mechanisms which she will take with her into the future.

“Last year I was unable to come into college for a few months due to a chronic injury and I was in a really bad place, but my course leaders and progress coaches were really supportive and with their help I was able to work around my difficulties.”

The result of this university offer is a testament to both Avleen’s determination and abilities, and the nurturing environment at BLC which helped and encouraged her on her way to success.

Whilst Avleen is still undecided in which field she wishes to specialise in, her dream would be to work with a professional football team as a sports scientist or physiotherapist.

She’s also excited to gain an international perspective on the sports industry with her course at the University of Portsmouth enabling her to study abroad in Australia for one year.
