LEEK STUDENTS PLAN TO ASTOUND IN VIRTUAL ART EXHIBITION

Students from the Leek School of Art have taken a creative approach to exhibiting their work following the impact of coronavirus.

The Astound20 Exhibition is usually held on site at the Nicholson Gallery, but due to social distancing regulations the group of students responsible for curating and planning the event have decided to exhibit virtually so that people can still enjoy the artwork on offer.

The students will also be donating a proportion of their exhibition sales to the NHS Covid-19 Appeal.

Penny Meakin, Chair of the Astound20 Committee said “This is a really exciting opportunity to experiment and to demonstrate students’ skills. The prime aim of the exhibition of our work was to bring art into the communities of the Staffordshire Moorlands and even though people are staying at home, we didn’t want them to miss out.”

“There will be an emphasis on ‘Mindfulness’ and the appreciation of what people are actually looking at and feeling emotionally, which feels more important than ever during this time.”

The virtual Astound20 exhibition will take place on 16 May 2020 to 6 June 2020 at www.facebook.com/astound20

Astound20 showcases the talent and creativity of the emerging artists on the Foundation Degree in Creative Art and Design Practice, Leek School of Art. Most of the diverse range of work on display is available to purchase and includes; paintings, mixed media, photography, print-making, textiles, glass and ceramics. The exhibition demonstrates a high level of professionalism, originality and imagination.
