New Year of opportunities at Buxton & Leek College

AN introduction to laser cutting is among the exciting new opportunities on offer through adult community learning courses at the Leek Campus of Buxton & Leek College this January.

As a new programme of opportunities is launched, many of the new Staffordshire County Council funded Learning for Leisure courses including laser cutting are offering free taster sessions to allow students to `try before they buy`. Starting with a free session on Wednesday January 20, laser cutting is open to anyone who would like to try their hand at making their own cards or even wedding stationery and students will be taught in the brand new William Morris Building of the Leek School of Art by tutor Rob Barks.

Rob said: “We will be using Photoshop so anyone with knowledge of that will be at an advantage but no qualifications are needed so all are welcome to come and have a go at using the new equipment. If they find they want to take things further after the course, then we are aiming to hire out the laser cutter for private use during the evenings.”

Those lucky enough to have received a new iPad for Christmas can learn how to make the most of it at Wednesday afternoon leisure classes at the Leek Campus – again with a free taster on Wednesday January 27. And there’s a chance for learners to brush up on their basic computer skills each Friday morning from 10 am.

Woodwork for beginners will offer the very latest in woodworking equipment in the college’s new workshop and would-be floral artists can learn the basics of flower arranging in time for spring at Monday evening classes.

Languages, including German, French and Spanish, are all available for those wanting to prepare for their travels abroad this year. And there’s also a sign language for beginners course as well as an opportunity to learn counselling skills.

Over in Biddulph, Buxton & Leek College is running courses at three separate venues with French and flower arranging on offer at the Biddulph High School, Art and Mediterranean Cookery at the James Bateman School and Maths and English classes which are free of charge at the Staffordshire Moorlands Children’s Centre.

Check out the college website for details of all these and other opportunities at www.blc.ac.uk/courses/leisure or call to register your interest in the free taster sessions on 0800 074 0099. For courses in Biddulph learners can also contact Gill Roberts direct on 07811 379888.
