Students out to conquer Everest for charity mission

INTREPID outdoor sports students from Buxton & Leek College will be attempting to climb the height of Everest for charity this week.

But the group won’t have to travel far to scale the equivalent of the earth’s highest mountain – only over to Harpur Hill where they aim to notch up 8,850 metres of the college climbing wall. The group will be climbing the six metre wall for six hours, between 10 am and 4pm on Thursday in a sponsored effort to help fund a charity mission to Morocco.

By taking part in the expedition abroad next April, the group aim to help promote equal opportunities by building girls’ toilets in a primary school. They plan to spend a fortnight abroad as part of a World Challenge project.

Allan Shaw, Buxton & Leek College’s Outdoor Sport Tutor, explained: “Female toilets are often not built in order to reduce the numbers in education. Buxton & Leek College firmly believes in education for all and our students are hoping to help build as many toilets as possible to further this aim.

“We will be organising fund-raising activities over coming months to help with the cost of the expedition and this week we are asking relatives, friends, staff and students to help us by sponsoring us per metre climbed.”

You can pop into the Costa at the Buxton Campus to sponsor the students.
