Students’ grand effort for Dougie Mac

A GROUP of five students from Buxton & Leek College raised over £1,000 for the Douglas MacMillan Hospice when they organised a fund-raising event as part of their course.

Teenagers on the Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sports Development, Coaching and Fitness, pulled out all the stops to put on a fun night at Leek’s Westwood Golf Club. Selling tickets at £10 each, they managed to attract the support of 14 teams for a quiz night and auction. And, not only did the Golf Club provide the premises free of charge, but local companies pitched in with goods to be auctioned for the local charity.

Several members of the group had their legs waxed after getting sponsored for the good cause and they managed the event from start to finish, from organising the food to selling the tickets and ensuring everything went smoothly on the night.

Course leader Shane Beckensall said: “I am very proud of this group of students for their commitment and the superb way in which they organised and managed this event. They managed to get a lot of support from local companies who provided prizes for the raffle and auction and it was a brilliant evening which was very well supported.”

Suzi Smith, Corporate Fundraising & Events Head at the Douglas Macmillan Hospice, said: “We would like to thank the students from Buxton and Leek College for raising such an incredible amount of money for Douglas Macmillan Hospice.

“The funds raised will go directly towards care for patients and families facing life limiting illnesses.”
