Teaching assistant’s top marks earn Dean’s award

A Mum of two from Endon has had her hard work in studying for a degree recognised with a Dean’s Award from the University of Derby.

Forty-year-old Julie Davies, who works as an Inclusion Support Assistant at Endon High School, is completing a three-year Foundation Degree in Children’s and Young People’s Services through evening classes at the Leek Campus of Buxton & Leek College. She is one of 48 students from the College of Education awarded for performing in the top 10% in her programme.

At a celebration held in Kirtley Hall at Kedleston Road, Derby, Julie’s tutor, Rebecca Lea, said: “Julie is a particularly industrious student, often spending hours researching online. She has gained the respect of her fellow students and had an excellent rapport with the tutors and students alike.

“Julie is willing to participate and is the cornerstone of the class online network. Her childcare knowledge is extensive, combined with keen observational skills and computer literacy, Julie always strives to achieve the very best. We, at Leek Campus, are delighted that Julie’s grades have been recognised with this award.”

Julie, who has worked in primary education for 13 years at Sneyd Green Primary School, moved to a new job at Endon High School in September and is enjoying the challenge of working with Special Educational Needs students. She said: “I have always done the best I can in my job and put in a lot of work for my Foundation Degree by studying each Tuesday evening at the Leek College Campus after a full day at work.

“I think the hardest part was returning to education after such a long break, but I’ve been lucky to have the support of my husband, Lee, and our parents who have helped out with childcare.

“I was thrilled beyond belief to get this award but feel rewarded every day by seeing the progress made by my students. I worked as personal welfare assistant to child with cerebral palsy who was struggling with his literacy and numeracy, and I’ve seen him go on to study to be a vet. I can wholeheartedly recommend the Foundation Degree course at Buxton & Leek College.”

Dr Lynn Senior, Dean of the College, said; “It was a fantastic evening and an opportunity to celebrate the hard work, commitment and enthusiasm out students have shown. The College of Education prides itself on the excellence of its students and it’s great to be able to award these outstanding students.”
